The POWER of the ‘SPOKEN WORD’
The POWER of the ‘SPOKEN WORD’
Genesis chapter 1 speaks to me about the power of the SPOKEN word. In Gen 1:2 the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters, but it was only when God spoke (Gen 1:3, 6, 9, 11, 14, 20, 24, 26) that everything came into existence. The word of God has power to heal us even today (Ps. 107:20; Mathew 8:16). Remember that death and life are in the power of the tongue (Prov. 18:21), so let us pray that God will give us a wholesome tongue (Prov. 15:4a) and we will only speak positive things and thereby bless others (Luke 6:28).
In Genesis 3:6 we see that Adam willfully disobeyed God’s direct commandment to him (see Gen 2:16, 17) even though he lacked nothing in the Garden of Eden – including food (unlimited provision of fruits from the garden) and companionship (Eve). The last Adam, Jesus Christ overcame temptations even though He did not have any food for 40 days/nights neither did He have any companionship as He was alone in the wilderness (Matt. 4:1-11). Both temptations were similar and involved the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the pride of life (1 John 2:16) – compare Gen. 3:6 with Matt. 4:3, 6, 9.
The lesson learnt here is that it is only our relationship and proximity with God (James 1:12-16; 1 Cor. 10:13) and His Word (Psalms 119:11) that can enable us to overcome temptations. Let’s pray the Lord’s Prayer today (Matt. 6:13) – “Do not lead us into temptation but deliver us from the evil one”!
