February 5 Bible Reading: Leviticus Chapters 16-18
Jesus Christ alone is the ‘Perfect Atonement’ for our sins
After the death of the two sons of Aaron, God restricted access for any priest to enter the Holy Place inside the veil and come into God’s presence (Lev. 16:2). On the tenth day of the seventh month called the Day of Atonement (Lev. 16:29), the High Priest enters the most Holy Place with one bull for himself as a sin offering (Lev. 16:6, 11-14), two goat kids of goats as sin offering for the people (Lev. 16:5, 7-10, 15-22), and one ram as a burnt offering for himself and the people of Israel (Lev. 16:5b, 24). It is interesting to note that of the two goats presented to God as a sin offering for the people, only one goat kid shall be killed and offered as a sin offering to God, while the other goat kid is set free into the wilderness (Lev. 16:7-10; 15-22). Jesus Christ became the ‘sin goat’ for us as the death sentence fell on Him, while we became the ‘goat set free’ by the grace of God.
By way of spiritual application, we can consider other things as well:
- Sin requires that a sacrifice be made (Hebrews 9:22)
- The blood alone makes atonement for us (Lev 17:11)
- Jesus paid for all of our sins (Isaiah 53:3-12)
- Jesus’ sacrifice was perfect (1 Peter 1:18-19)
- Jesus took our punishment (1 Peter 2:21-24)
- Jesus willingly died for our sins (John 10:17; 1 Corinthians 15:3)
- Jesus secured salvation through His blood (Acts 20:28)
- Jesus provided the atonement for our sins (Romans 3:23-25)
- Jesus’ death purchased forgiveness (1 Corinthians 7:23)
- We cannot improve Jesus’ sacrifice (1 Peter 3:18)
- Our atonement allows us to know God (Ephesians 2:13)
- Jesus’ death rescues us from eternal punishment (Colossians 1:13)
Knowing that we can “…come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need” (Heb 4:16), let us reach out to God today through the shed blood of Jesus on the cross, for Jesus Christ alone is the ‘Perfect Atonement’ for our sins.
