WITHOUT GOD we can DO ‘NOTHING’
January 4 Bible Reading: Genesis Chapters 10-12
WITHOUT GOD we can DO ‘NOTHING’
The unfinished tower and city of Babel (Genesis 11:1-9) stands out as a dire testimony that God hates every effort of man to make a name for himself apart from God. Their plans to build the city and tower were harmless, but they were conceived out of selfishness, inflated egos and pride – just to make a name for themselves (Gen. 11:4).
God’s principle in this matter is specified in Psalms 127:1 - “Unless the Lord builds a house (or tower or city) they labor in vain who build it…” With their building projects unfinished and having serious communication issues, God scattered these workers everywhere on the earth into oblivion.
Compare this incident with God’s call to Abram in Gen. 12:1-3, where God unilaterally promised Abram to make him a great nation, make his name great and make all the families of the earth to be blessed in him if he only obeyed His word. Abram, whose name was later changed to Abraham - the father of many nations (Gen. 17:5) truly became great as God promised and his children (descendants of Israel & Ishmael) still influence our world today.
The lesson to be learned here is that when we obey God’s word and humble ourselves under the mighty hand of God, He will exalt us in due time (1 Peter 5:6). Remember, without God we can do NOTHING in our lives just as Jesus had declared in John 15:5b: "without Me you can do nothing".
